Distance Learning in K–12 Education

My main experience with distance learning happened during the COVID-19 pandemic when school shifted completely online. I used tools like Zoom, Google Classroom, and Nearpod to attend classes, turn in assignments, and work on group projects. Zoom made it easier to connect with my teachers and classmates, but it was definitely harder to stay focused for long periods behind a screen. One technology I didn’t get to try but would like to experience is Edpuzzle because it makes learning videos more interactive by adding questions and activities. I think that kind of engagement would have helped me stay more motivated during online learning.

Open Educational Resources (OER)

Open Educational Resources, or OER, are free materials that teachers and students can use and adapt for learning without worrying about copyright or cost. These resources include things like online textbooks, videos, lesson plans, and even full courses that anyone can access. I found a great article on Edutopia called “Open Educational Resources (OER): Resource Roundup” that shares different websites and tools teachers can use to find OER materials. It explains how OER helps make education more equal by giving every student access to quality learning materials, no matter their background. I think OER is an amazing way to promote creativity and collaboration in classrooms.

Assignment 4: PowerPoint for Information Dissemination

While working on Assignment 4, I learned a lot about how to design a PowerPoint that clearly shares information in an engaging way. I practiced using CRAP design principles (contrast, repetition, alignment, and proximity) to make each slide look organized and easy to read. I also learned how to add alt-text for accessibility and how to make my slides interactive with quick questions or visuals. What I liked most was the creativity involved, but I realized I sometimes included too much text. Next time, I’ll try to simplify my slides and focus more on visuals that support my key points.
